Sample 5 Minute Poem:
In my first neighborhood I could walk to my grandparents and sled in the street because the hills were so steep that they couldn't be plowed.
In my great grandma's neighborhood I wasn't allowed to play kickball in the streets because the neighborhood was changing from mostly German-Italian immigrants to mixed races so my grandparents were nervous.
My new neighborhood was so tight knit that we ran from one end to the other playing release and freeze tag until it after dark almost every night.
I am from a family of five, with a stay at home mom, a mailman for a dad, and three daughters, including me.
One of my parents did not graduate from high school, but together they worked hard to give us access to a great education.
When we cried, even for legitimate reasons, my dad would always say, "Stop crying, or I will give you something to cry about!"
Even though I moved away, we are still all very close, making sure to visit during all breaks from school and over the summer.
I am from a public elementary school that I had to walk up hill both ways to attend because it was out of my district to avoid the busing associated with desegragation.
I transferred to St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Catholic school in third grade when it became impossible to avoid the hour long bus ride.
My high school was Baldwin High, home of the Highlanders, with school colors of purple and white, bon fires for homecoming football games, a stadium with integrated athletic facilities, and a prom that was held at a hotel in downtown Pittsburgh.
After high school I attended Dickinson College, former site of Redskins training camp, then Wilmington University for my Masters Degree.
I am from a friend group that is quite small and selective.
While I have maintained contact with friends from elementary, high school and college, I consider my family to be my greatest friends.
Aside from them, my friendships at Hungtingtown High School have evolved out of common interests.
Only a few of these friendships extend to weekends and summer vacations, which is fine with me.
