Objective:
Warm-up:
Classwork:
- Each table has been assigned to represent an interest group or to play the role of a state senator. You will have class time and homework time to research your role and prepare to participate in the hearing.
- Tomorrow the hearing will open with statements from each interest group. Each group will have 5 minutes to deliver an opening statement. The statements should work to convince the state senators to vote for or against the proposed law, or to rewrite it.
- After opening statements, the senators will have 15 minutes to question the interest groups.
- The state Senate Education Committee will then vote on the proposed law—to move it out of committee as is, to reject it outright, or to work to modify it.
Homework:
- Interest Groups: Prepare to share your stakeholder remarks and respond to targeted questions by members of the legislative committee.
- Senators: Familiarize yourself with the legislation and stakeholder positions, then prepare targeted questions for each interest group.
